Bamboo

Bamboo textile is any cloth, yarn or clothing made from bamboo fibres. While historically used only for structural elements, such as bustles and the ribs of corsets, in recent years different technologies have been developed that allow bamboo fibre to be used for a wide range of textile and fashion applications.

Modern clothing made from bamboo is usually viscose rayon, a fiber made by dissolving the cellulose in the bamboo, and then extruding it to form fibres. This process removes the natural characteristics of bamboo fibre, rendering it identical to rayon from other cellulose sources.

Viscose rayon is similar to modal (most commonly made from beechwood) and lyocell (most commonly made from eucalyptus). The differences between viscose, modal and lyocell are subtle. It comes down to the manufacturing process and structure of the filament. Viscose and modal are made using a very similar process with similar chemicals used at each stage of production. Viscose production has been continuously refined over the past 100 years to make a textile which is soft yet easy-care. 

Bamboo fabrics tend to be a more durable option than cotton but they do require a lot of attention. You have to be gentle when running cleaning cycles and you should make sure to follow the instructions regarding whether you should run them under warm or cold water. 

We suggest you follow the care instructions specific to the yarn you are using and when in doubt hand wash in tepid water using a mild soap. Do not agitate or twist. Lay garment flat on a towel and roll it up like a sleeping bag.  You can let that sit from 15 minutes to the following day to ensure the towel wicks out as much moisture as possible.  Then unroll, place on a clean, dry towel, shape and dry flat.
